Overtourism and the future of the Alps

Loving a place to death is a real risk. So is hollowing out its towns.

Beyond more or fewer

The conversation about alpine tourism too often flattens into a binary: more visitors or fewer. The harder, truer question is which visitors, when, and how.

Spreading the load

Spreading arrivals across the seasons and away from a handful of famous valleys is not a constraint on tourism. It is the only version of it that lasts.

A shared responsibility

Operators, communities and travellers each hold part of the answer. None can solve it alone, and pretending otherwise is how places get loved to death.
